Hysterectomy FAQs

What are the different types of hysterectomy?
The goal of a hysterectomy is to remove your uterus, and there are several different ways to go about this, depending on your situation:
  • Subtotal hysterectomy is the least invasive type of hysterectomy where the doctor removes only the upper part of your uterus, keeping your cervix intact.
  • Total hysterectomy where the surgeon removes your entire uterus and cervix.
  • Radical hysterectomy your surgeon removes your uterus, your cervix, surrounding tissue, and the top part of your vagina. Doctors typically reserve a radical hysterectomy for cases where cancer is the issue.
Besides the hysterectomy, your  doctor may also remove your ovaries and fallopian tubes, depending on your situation.
Why do I need a hysterectomy?
There are many reasons why women opt for a hysterectomy, chief among them:
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Problematic uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine prolapse (when your uterus collapses into your vagina)
  • Adenomyosis
  • Reproductive organ cancers
The decision to have a hysterectomy is never an easy one since it effectively puts an end to your ability to have children. But if your life is severely hampered by conditions causing you great pain, your uterus may be more of a liability than an asset.

Rest assured, the doctors at Capital Women's Care try several approaches before turning to a hysterectomy.

How is a hysterectomy performed?
The surgeons at Capital Women's Care have extensive expertise using the latest laparoscopic techniques, and they even use the da Vinci® Surgical  system. This high-tech tool provides the surgeon with superior vision and the ability to work more accurately, blending human experience with technical precision.

The doctors typically perform one the following hysterectomies, with or without the robotic system:
  • Total vaginal hysterectomy: The doctor goes in through your vagina to remove your uterus.
  • Laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy: The surgeon makes tiny incisions in your abdomen, uses specialized equipment for the first part of the procedure, then goes in through your vagina to remove your uterus and cervix.
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy: The doctor removes your uterus and cervix, if necessary, through small incisions in your abdomen.
