Fibroids FAQs

What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) masses that develop on the walls of your uterus. You can develop one or several, and they can range in size from a seed to a softball.
What causes uterine fibroids?
The cause of uterine fibroids is still unclear, but hormones and genetics play a key role. However, medical researchers have uncovered several factors that increase your risk of developing them, including:

Age
As you age, you’re more prone to developing fibroids, typically starting in your 30s and continuing through your 40s. Usually, once you go through menopause, the fibroids begin to shrink due to the decrease in your hormone levels.

Race
Black women are more likely to develop fibroids. In fact, 70% of white women have fibroids by age 50 while 80% of black women have the condition.

Heredity
If the women in your family tend to develop fibroids, you may also.

Obesity
Fibroids are common among women with weight issues.

Diet
If your diet is heavy on red meat and light on greens, you’re more at risk for fibroids.

What are the symptoms of uterine fybroids?
The most common symptoms of uterine fibroids are:
  • Heavy bleeding during periods
  • Longer periods
  • Pelvic pressure or pain
  • Backaches
  • Frequent urination
  • Constipation
How can uterine fibroids be treated?
When it comes to treating your problematic fibroids, the OB/GYNs at Capital Women’s Care work with you to find a treatment that alleviates your symptoms and works with your goals. These options include:
  • Hormonal contraceptives
  • Hormone agonists
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Laparoscopic surgical removal
  • Endometrial ablation
  • Hysterectomy

In choosing the best treatment option for you, the gynecologists take into consideration what your primary goals are, as well as your level of discomfort.

For example, if you want to get pregnant, hormonal solutions aren’t a great option. In this case, the gynecological team works with you to find a solution that still allows you to conceive.

On the other hand, if pregnancy isn’t a concern and you want to put an end to painful and heavy periods, a hysterectomy may provide the best solution.
To discuss your treatment options, call Capital Women's Care to make an appointment.
